Event Details
If you want to dance, but can't make your feet go the right way, you will enjoy contra dancing. The origins of contras are in the stately court dances of Europe, but they picked up pace on this side of the Atlantic. There's no fancy footwork to these traditional line dances, just a series of easy-to-remember figures.
You'll do some square dance moves like the do-si-do and the allemand, and exciting new figures like the balance-and-swing and hey-for-four. It's a great way to have fun and meet people. No partner needed. Contras are mixers and you'll dance with everyone.
Wear flat shoes and light, loose clothing.
Stephanie Hysmith and David Mould, board members of Friends of Old Time Music and Dance of the Kanawha Valley (FOOTMAD), are dedicated contra dancers and dance callers.
